Gentle giants swimming into danger

Scientists monitoring the movement of whale sharks from Western Australia's Ningaloo reef, off the state's north-west, say the giant fish often swim into areas where they are in danger of being slaughtered for their fins. Scientists from the CSIRO and the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) began tagging six whale sharks in May and have been tracking their movements over the Internet....

FISHERS and divers from the northern rivers of NSW have enthusiastically welcomed news of a captive breeding program for the endangered grey nurse shark, to supplement wild populations. The Northern Rivers Fisheries Conference originally proposed the initiative in 2003 in a submission to the Threatened Species Unit, conference chairman Ken Thurlow told the Times....

In the wake of several shark attacks, Florida scientists think they have found a genuine shark repellent. The repellent is based on a shark's hatred or fear caused by the smell of a rotting shark carcass and could be available by next year, WESH 2 News reported....

A great white shark that has been held in captivity in California far longer than any other member of its species has killed two smaller tankmates, heightening critics' calls for the animal's release.
One of the soupfin sharks at the Monterey Bay Aquarium died Feb. 23 after an attack by the great white. The second soupfin died Tuesday from injuries received in an attack a day earlier, said Randy Kochevar, a marine biologist at the aquarium.....
